Waiting on Memphis to Change Do Something Instead

Im glad that the writers strike is over and they can go back to their jobs. I remember reading the article one of the staff reporters wrote on last week about the strike being over. I guess I can say I am brainless today since I have not used it at all. I had a good weekend. It was a wanted break from college and just chill out and calm my body down from being overloaded last week.

In a post last week, I mentioned that I responded to the author of Commontaries about the issue of guns and violence in schools. The author wrote in response to my comment that

"The schools are reflective of the community. With all these shootings going on
in the community. Why wouldnt there be shooting in the schools also? Im not in
favor of paying students to tell on each other, but I dont fight against it. We
need some folks on the job all the time."

I know someone is reading what I have to say. This is a start of interaction with other bloggers. I slightly agree schools being reflective of the community because I tend to see the area where different schools are located and looking around and seeing the people and activities around the neighborhood can prompt an opinion on stating whether the schools are bucking the system or if they show moral values. I hope that made sense to you. I can go ahead and say that if someone states an opinion about a school before understanding it as a whole, then that person will get their sentences "thrown away" by a student that attends that whatever said school. This goes back to understanding others viewpoint and listening to them before we stopped them from talking. This goes along the lines of my response to the writing prompt from last week. Memphis City Schools need help. Help and support from the community, teachers, and principals, and from the state level. The violence and people getting shot and killed will not do us any good when other people reflect their opinions about our city. This is just a start to new problems, or a place to freeze everything and make a change.

A Positive Influence

There are millions of people that I know. Out of everyone, theres one particular person that has a positive influence in my life. This wonderful lady is JoAnn Hollenbach. She is my retired Honors Humanities teacher. I must say there can be several reasons why I chose this person. Ms. Hollenbach taught me as well as others to broaden our horizon. She wanted also wanted me to be open-minded and to have a voice, and to enjoy life.

Since I have graduated from Raleigh-Egypt High, I want to go beyond just living in Memphis, to go out and learn more. I can remember Ms. Hollenbach teaching a lesson about Italy and how she would travel and expand her thinking. This lesson impacted me because I want to go out and visit other countries and learn about their ways of living and a new viewpoint of other cultures. This one lesson Ms. Hollenbach taught me is always on my mind. I will call this a goal in life.

The next positive value is Ms. Hollenbach teaching me not to have a closed mind, but to see a better way of thinking. This influenced me to be prepared for the different reactions, beliefs, opinions, and ways of life from other cultural people. I believe it is a good thing to be able to state my opinion and show the world that I have a voice. She influenced me not be dumb or stupid; therefore, I have the eagerness to learn more and gain more knowledge. Knowledge is power!

The last thing that led her to influence me is to go out and enjoy life. She didnt want me to just be left out in the world, but to have this young spirit and to know that I am somebody. To me, enjoying life is making myself happy. For example, relaxing, watching TV, reading, going out to learn more education ideas, seeing theatrical productions, and knowing that I am happy allow me to know that I enjoy life.

Ms. JoAnn Hollenbach influenced me in several ways from expanding my horizon, being open-minded, and wanting to know more to have a voice that allows me to let others know how I think and feel.

Im a Student Blogger

Usually Mondays and Fridays is when I encountered the challenge of what to post on here. This Monday is a different story. I found a topic that I have found to have meaning; therefore, I decided to write my true feelings about blogging, using this in class, and the course itself.

When I first came to the class and started hearing about having blogs as apart of English class, I never had an actual reaction to how Wendy was going to integrated technology in the class. I feel that technology should be used in classes integrated with the regular chalkboard, lectures, and labs. I can recall reading articles in the past about technology being used in schools and how average people are not up-to-date on using computers. I believe that fact can be true. Coming to class with materials and doing everything else such as typing up papers, assignments, and submitting them online is actually good for me in way. I would want to turn in the assignment online and give a hard copy to the teacher.

As I started to get to know Wendy and how she runs her class, in retrospect, this class is going pretty well. I do like using the blogs as way to sort out and better my writing. So far this semester, or year, I have written a good pile of posts. I think they are not just posts, but writing and thoughts with meaning. Im not writing just for nothing, but with a purpose. The theme of this class is to "Think Globally, Act Locally" and I know this is a journey in progress for me. I feel like Im accomplishing this goal. I may want to tell others about this blog and my paper. It can come in handy and with creativity, it can serve as a presentation of some sort. I am quite sure where blogging will take me, but I think this blog is a part of me. I say this because its something I enjoy doing not just having it for class, but just a hobby and an outlet to online journalism. I dont expect to stop blogging once I leave Wendys class because this is like proof of what I have been doing in the class, and what is going on with me and college. This is my work. This blog is me. I am this blog.

One thing I have noticed is that my passion and knowledge on the topic that Im writing about this semester is rising to the surface. The voice that is kept silent within me is starting to rattle and make an appearance. I do not really share my position an issue since I dont think that it matters to everyone. I observe what goes on around the university and people and I have second thoughts if someone believes what I tell them. I guess they will find out one way or another. This blog helps me to put everything Im thinking and progressing through Freshman year on the internet for anyone and everyone to read. I am glad I have am apart of Wendys class. I find the work to be challenging, but not hard. In other words you have to be on top of the work and making sure you leave time to work on everything to meet the multiple deadlines.

Sometimes I read articles, essays, and post something I have written, I do not find that as a challenge to block me from being productive. There are times when I stumble into a wall that blocks me from writing or tend to challenge me. Other times, I just feel the urge to write in my blog. Writing papers or a responsive essay that is worth writing has meaning. Blogging itself, or the blogger, must have a reason to blog or a specific purpose to blog whether it is personal, for entertainment, formal or informal. Being that said, there is a purpose for me wanting to write in this blog. If I did not show interest in this blog, then I would have less posts and not frequent updates as required. Sometimes I can go beyond the box of just blogging. Interaction with other bloggers can be a good aspect of blogging.

Besides just blogging for the class, along with my big paper on school assessment and this blog, I want to do something with it. Everything that is being accomplished and the finish products, the big paper and the blog (which may keep going), would like to use these go take along with me on and adventure. I am ready for the adventure.

Life tell me whats next

Life after graduating college (December 2012) becomes more real each day and it opens a new door of adulthood. A new chapter, a new stones to be stepped on. I guess its okay fall over and get muddy. But the other hand, I say proudly say that I have a Bachelor of Arts in English with the concentration of English as a Second Language. Im still looking for a job currently. These two months have not been great when Im used to always doing something everything since Ive been in school since 2007. But Im sure if I keep looking and work hard to my goals, then something is bound to pop up and catch my attention. Or even better fall into my hands! I certainly cant go too long without money. Tisk, tisk.. being broke and without is not an option. 

Besides that this winter has not been a real winter. Sprinkles, snow flurry showers, and an inch of snow here and there just isnt satisfying me right now. The only thing I think we have to worry about here in Memphis is icy and slick road conditions. Never the less I was happy get that much. Im just ready for warmer weather and longer days! Those spring, warm, breezy days are coming soon. I can feel it. And I think Blogger should take after Microsoft Word and add more choices of fonts and real, numerical font sizes. If the options are good enough for them, then it may just be good enough for us to use. But Id suggest upgrading those areas.

And if you dont like Adele, you should. Thats all Im going to say about her.. ooh.. and her performance at the Oscars!!  However, the song is "Skyfall" is still growing on me. Last years Grammay performance?... my life was handed to be all in one night. I was "Rolling in the Deep" with Adele. Loved it! Despite the negative comments from the oppositions, Im still gonna love her. She finally said her babys name.. and Im waiting for a new album from her. Im sure shes been working on new songs.

Playing the game freeze tag was fun as a child. I think every elementary student should have played that game.  All that running and playing was good for us in those days. Now it is hard to get ourselves out to get some exercise each week. Besides freeze tag, everyone enjoyed a good game of dodge ball and kick ball during free time after a good lunch meal.  With this said, Ive been tagged! Not physically tagged, but by another blogger.

Joel, the blogger, maintains So You Want to Teach? has tagged me. I found that out from an email I received this morning. Ill follow the rules and continue the game of blog tag!

The Rules:

Now that I understand what to do, I will answer the questions. Now you and others can learn little bit about me on a personal level.

1. What was I doing 10 years ago?

Back to the past around the year of 1988.  Im not quite sure what happened during that year. I was in elementary school. During that time I had just moved from St. Louis to where Im currently at in Memphis. I was busy being a child and making friends and doing my schoolwork. You know what the typical children do around their younger years. There were may be the moments of misbehaving and getting others in trouble. That is just about as much as I can remember for now.

2. What are the 5 things on my to-do list for today (not in any particular order):

• Study for tomorrows exam - one of three
• Start packing and cleaning up my dorm room to move out
• Finish my English 1020 research paper to turn in Monday morning
• Watch some television and just chill out
• Get stressed out from studying too much and just tired myself out

4. Things I would do if I were a billionaire:

• Save some of the money to buy a customized house (and maybe another house in another city)
• Give some money to my family when they are in need only with the limitation of "two collect this much money" passes
• Buy two cars to park in my garage
• Have some money to put towards my college tuition each year
• A billion dollars is much so, I wouldnt really know what else to do with it besides putting it in the bank for future needs

• Being lazy

• Misplacing important items and get angry when I find it

Honestly, I have never really had a job. However, I have helped my aunt with her gas station and my aunt here in Memphis at her former job doing office work.

1. Mark writes his blog about anything and everything. He has the mind of just talking about anything from the smallest problem to the daily happenings of his family. I enjoy reading his posts about his life each week.

2. Skwigg is a lady of the fitness. She blogs about her health and staying in shape. She is a person who enjoys eating different types of food. If you want a good work, it will be nice to read the blog about health and fitness.

3. Martin is a voice in the field of higher education. He is proud supporter of the field as well. I enjoy reading this blog and what Martin writes about. I would like to get to know him since he likes to write about the college life and report news about anything that is happening to college students.

4. Max may be a young blogger, but he goes make good points about the world of blogging in his posts. I enjoy reading his weekly tips and blurbs about how to make a better post or how to earn money while you blog.  Its a blog about blogging, so though he is young, hes a cool blogger.

5. Darren is a California teacher expressing everything about the teaching field and politics that deals with teachers. I would like to know little bit about him as a blogger. He talks about how the school system affects him personally outside and inside the classroom.
