A new look Five free icon packs for your Android Launcher 2014

If  you look beyond just simple wallpapers, Android has a ton of choices for users to customize their device to their wants and needs. One of the easiest ways to do this is by choosing a unique icon pack. Here we show you the top free icon packs that you can grab for your Android device.
icon packs android
 © AndroidPIT
Before we dive into it, a few house keeping items: most icon packs require a launcher such as Apex, Nova, or ADW installed to work. Make sure that whatever launcher you are using is compatible with the icon pack you’re downloading.  The installation itself is pretty simple after that: simply select the package once you’ve downloaded it from the Google Play Store through your launcher. There are more complex icon packs that require a little more intensive installation methods, but we’re only covering the simple ones here.

Min

The name says it all: Min is a minimalistic icon package that only takes its full effect if you remove the labels from the icons and choose them to displayed as monochrome. Purists might find that Min is their desired icon package as it brings a harmonized balance to the home screen without all the flash of colorful or oversized icons.

For many apps, there are specially design icons while other are automatically enclosed in a small circle with a white border. For those, the inner part of the circle contains a part of the original icon and gives the appearance as if you’re looking through a keyhole. Min works particularly well with a simple or plan wallpaper and is available for free on the Google Play Store.
  • Compatible Launchers: Apex, Action, Nova, ADW, Smart
  • Number of available icons: > 570
  • Size: 4.1 MB

Glaskart

Again, the minimalistic option reigns supreme here. The Glaskart icon theme is characterized by monochrome icons I different shades of grey. Each icon is backed by a semi transparent square with rounded corners; thus the icons are much more visible against the background.

Again, the effect of the semi-transparent grey app icon is highly dependent on the choice of the background image. A simple background makes a good option to get the full effect. Glaskart is compatible with the Nova, Go, and Apex launchers and is free on the Google Play Store.
  • Compatible Launchers: Nova, Apex, Go
  • Number of available icons:  > 750
  • Size:  9.1 MB

Lipse Icons

Round and colorful is what distinguishes the Lipse icon pack from the rest. However, the colorful appearance is quite stylish: the icons don’t look overdone and there are no inflated 3D effects or highlights. Lightweight light-dark curves in the icons as well as a subtle shadow below the icon really make them pop out from the background.

Lipse is free in the Google Play Store, but doesn’t work with the Go Launcher. There is also a monochrome version of the app that is also available for download via Google Play.
  • Compatible Launchers:  Nova, Apex, Holo
  • Number of available icons:  > 500
  • Size:  9.1 MB

Crumbled

This icon pack makes your App Drawer look like someone struck it with a heavy hammer once and then just walked away. The name definitely says it all as the icon pack make everything look as if it is about to fall apart.

The advantage of Crumbled is that it’s universal across all your apps and it automatically sets the theme across all your app icons to the Crumbled theme. This guarantees that each icon gets the Crumbled style and is also a very slim download at only 382 kilobytes. Crumbled is free in the Google Play Store.
  • Compatible Launchers:  Nova, Apex, Holo, ADW
  • Number of available icons:  None (Icon Mask)
  • Size:  382 kB

Rust Icons

Rust Icons is more concerned with the rough and unpolished look. This icon pack lets you transform your home screen into a rough concrete wall. The app icons are classically implemented as circles making the overall appearance more uniform.

The charm of concrete: Rust icons.  © AndroidPIT
When laid against a black background the rough texture is very clear and easy to distinguish. The same can be said when used against the matching wallpaper that comes with the Rust package. Rust Icons, as with everything else listed here, is available for free from the Google Play Store.
  • Compatible Launchers:  Nova, Apex, Holo, ADW
  • Number of available icons:  > 475
  • Size:  22 MB
There we go! Five free icon packs for you to choose from. What are some of your favorite icon packs?

How to Finance a Car and Get a Car Loan

How to Finance a Car

You found your dream car. Now, you need to pay for it. Most car shoppers need a car loan to buy their next new or used car. Check out the car financing basics covered below to make sure you get the best car loan for your new vehicle.

The Basics of Car Loans

A car loan is a way for you to purchase a new or used vehicle. You borrow money from a lender and pay them back over time, usually with interest. The amount you borrow is called the loan principle. Car loans almost always include interest, which is how lenders make a profit on the money they lend you. The interest rate is a certain percentage of the loan that you must pay back in addition to the loan principle. So, if you borrow $20,000 for a car at a 5 percent interest rate, youre going to end up paying the bank $21,000 over the life of the loan -- thats the principle, plus the interest. You’ll also pay taxes and fees, so make sure you take into account all the expenses associated with owning a car when you sit down to determine your budget. This also includes insurance, fuel, maintenance and repair costs.

The Car Loan Term

The length of the car loan, or loan term, simply refers to the amount of time you have to pay the lender back. If you sign up for a five-year term, in five years youll pay the money back and will own the car free and clear. What the loan term doesnt mean is that five years from now youll have to come up with all of the money. The vast majority of auto loans are repaid in monthly installments. You send the lender a set amount each month and slowly pay off the loan.
Many people think that when you finance a car, the finance company lends you the money and the car is yours. Thats a simple way of looking at it. In reality, however, the lender is buying the car and letting you use it. The lender technically owns the car, though you agree to be responsible for it. In fact, you wont have the title to the car and fully own it until you make your last loan payment. If you don’t make your loan payments, the lender can repossess the car.

Your Credit Score

All interest rates are not created equal. Some people get charged more interest, and some get charged less. Obviously, you want to get charged less. The interest rate lenders charge is based largely on your credit score, which is a number that credit bureaus assign to you based on how much debt you have, how good youve been about paying bills on time, how long you’ve been using credit and your debt to income ratio, which is the amount of debt you have versus how much money you earn. Lenders use the score to assess how likely you are to pay them back. If your score is low, theyll think youre not likely to repay the auto loan and charge you more money to cover that risk.
Young people often have lower credit scores, even if theyve been good about staying out of debt and paying their bills. Thats because young people dont have long credit histories, which makes it difficult for lenders to tell how much of a risk they are. As a result, people without long credit histories can be charged higher interest rates too.
You should know what your credit score is before you apply for a car loan and do your best to make sure its high. For a small fee, you can get it through FICO, which is the most commonly used credit score among lenders, as well as through Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. If your score is not as high as youd like, paying off old bills (like credit card debt) and paying all bills on time for six to nine months should bring your score up and help you get a better interest rate.
You’ll also want to take a look at your credit report to make sure everything is accurate. If someone stole your identity and opened a credit card in your name and you aren’t aware of it, this could affect your ability to get a car loan. Plus, you’ll want to report the fraudulent activity right away to the credit bureaus so any errors can be fixed before you apply for auto financing.

Apply, Apply, Apply

You wouldnt just apply to one job or one college, so you shouldnt apply to just one lender for a car loan. Contact your bank, local credit unions and other lenders to find out what theyre offering. Youll have to fill out loan applications, which will ask for your social security number, employment and income information, monthly expenses, like mortgage and rent, and any outstanding debts, like credit cards and student loans. When you fill out auto loan applications through multiple lenders, be sure to do it all at once, or within a close time frame. Credit bureaus will see your multiple applications and realize you’re shopping for auto financing. If you spread your applications out, keep in mind that multiple applications for financing can lower your credit score. Do all your applications around the same time, so as not to lower your score.
Do not be tempted to exaggerate your income or misstate your expenses and amount of debt. Everything you fill out on a loan application will be verified and if you lie, you’ll get caught. The lender will use your social security number to pull your credit history and credit score and decide whether or not to make you a loan offer based on that information, as well as your income, expenses and debts.
Take some time to go over all the offers, and dont just look at the interest rates. Avoid offers that charge you a lot of fees. Another thing to look at is the car loan term. A longer auto loan might result in a lower monthly payment, but over the long haul, you’ll pay more in interest. Also, watch out for loans that have a prepayment penalty, which is a fee charged if you pay the loan off early. Paying the loan off early may not be something youll be able to do, but if your long-lost Aunt Mabel dies and leaves you a fortune, paying it off could save you a lot of money, and you dont want to pay extra fees to do it.

Dont Feel Dejected about Getting Rejected

Dont feel too badly if your car loan application is rejected. Its probably a good thing. A rejected loan application means the lender didnt think youd be able to pay the money back. As hard as that is to hear, that lender likely just saved you from getting into more debt than you can handle. Reassess your budget to determine what you can truly afford, not just monthly, but over the life of the loan. Try finding a less expensive car to buy, consider a used car or save up more money so you have a larger down payment, which will reduce the amount you’ll need to borrow.

Show Up with Financing

Many car buyers might think that the car dealership is offering you the best financing rates. Thats not always the case. While you should certainly consider the loan the dealership offers, the best way to get the lowest interest rate is to bring a pre-approved loan from your bank, credit union or third-party lender when you go to the dealership. If the dealership can beat the interest rate you’ve already been pre-approved for, or has a similar rate but with fewer fees, you can decide to take that offer. If not, you already have financing. Pay attention to the loan length, as a lower interest rate offer from the dealer and a longer term may not translate into a better deal.
Bringing your own financing to the table also means youll have the upper hand when it comes time to sit down with the finance manager. Some dealers will give you a great price on a car, but will charge you a higher interest rate on the car loan, which will cost you more money in the long run. This is an area where dealers can make a profit on the vehicle. With financing in hand, you can focus on the price of the car and your trade-in, if you have one.
Now that you understand the basics of financing a car, you’ll be able to get the best car loan for your budget and your new vehicle.

How to design a code converter using VHDL

Code converter finds application in digital system design and in this blog it is shown how to design a code converter using VHDL. There are many instances that requires code conversion for example in communication system encoding. For example binary to excess 3 code or binary to gray code or gray code to excess 3 code.

The conversion of codes from one to another can be done in different ways. One way is to construct state diagram. Another way is simply to use case statements or if-then-elsif or select statements. There may be also other ways.

Here it is shown how case statement and select statement can be using to convert binary code to excess 3 code.

The first thing to know is what and how they need to converted. 4bit excess 3 code is obtained by adding 0011 to the 4 bit binary value.

It is helpful to construct a truth table for the conversion.

There are 16 codes listed above, but here only 8 codes will be illustrated as this is enough to illustrate how to implement the conversion.

Let x and y be the input and output respectively, that is x is the binary 4 bit input and y is the 4 bit excess 3 code output.

So the entity declaration would look this,

entity code_converter is
    port(
    x : in std_logic_vector(3 downto 0);
    y : out std_logic_vector(3 downto 0)
    )
end code_converter;

Now to the question of How to design a code converter using VHDL?

First it is shown how select statement can be used to do the code conversion. The architecture for the code converter using the select statment is as follows,

architecture Select_RTL of code_converter is

begin
        with x select
        y <= "0011" when "0000",
        "0100" when "0001",
        "0101" when "0010",
        "0110" when "0011",
        "0111" when "0100",
        "1000" when "0101",
        "1001" when "0110",
        "1010"    when "0111",
        "XXXX" when others;

end Select_RTL;

Now the same code conversion can be achieved using case statement as follows,

architecture Case_RTL of code_converter is

begin
    process (x)
    begin
        case x is
            when "0000" => y <= "0011";
            when "0001"    => y <= "0100";
            when "0010"    => y <= "0101";
            when "0011" => y <= "0110";
            when "0100" => y <= "0111";
            when "0101" => y <= "1000";
            when "0110" => y <= "1001";
            when "0111" => y <= "1010";
            when others => y <= "XXXX";
        end case;

    end process;
end Case_RTL;

Yet there is another method that can be used to implement this conversion. It is much simpler than the above two methods.

architecture add_RTL of code_converter is

signal y_int : integer;

begin
    y_int <= to_integer(unsigned(x)) + 3;
    y <= std_logic_vector(to_unsigned(y_int,4));

end add_RTL;

In this method, the input binary x was converted to integer and 3 was added to it. The result was converted back to binary bits.

See the tutorial- http://appliedelectronicsengineering.blogspot.com/2014/10/how-to-convert-stdlogicvector-to.html to see how to convert between different data types.

So in this way we can use different methods to design a code converted using VHDL.

A Positive Influence

There are millions of people that I know. Out of everyone, theres one particular person that has a positive influence in my life. This wonderful lady is JoAnn Hollenbach. She is my retired Honors Humanities teacher. I must say there can be several reasons why I chose this person. Ms. Hollenbach taught me as well as others to broaden our horizon. She wanted also wanted me to be open-minded and to have a voice, and to enjoy life.

Since I have graduated from Raleigh-Egypt High, I want to go beyond just living in Memphis, to go out and learn more. I can remember Ms. Hollenbach teaching a lesson about Italy and how she would travel and expand her thinking. This lesson impacted me because I want to go out and visit other countries and learn about their ways of living and a new viewpoint of other cultures. This one lesson Ms. Hollenbach taught me is always on my mind. I will call this a goal in life.

The next positive value is Ms. Hollenbach teaching me not to have a closed mind, but to see a better way of thinking. This influenced me to be prepared for the different reactions, beliefs, opinions, and ways of life from other cultural people. I believe it is a good thing to be able to state my opinion and show the world that I have a voice. She influenced me not be dumb or stupid; therefore, I have the eagerness to learn more and gain more knowledge. Knowledge is power!

The last thing that led her to influence me is to go out and enjoy life. She didnt want me to just be left out in the world, but to have this young spirit and to know that I am somebody. To me, enjoying life is making myself happy. For example, relaxing, watching TV, reading, going out to learn more education ideas, seeing theatrical productions, and knowing that I am happy allow me to know that I enjoy life.

Ms. JoAnn Hollenbach influenced me in several ways from expanding my horizon, being open-minded, and wanting to know more to have a voice that allows me to let others know how I think and feel.

Im a Student Blogger

Usually Mondays and Fridays is when I encountered the challenge of what to post on here. This Monday is a different story. I found a topic that I have found to have meaning; therefore, I decided to write my true feelings about blogging, using this in class, and the course itself.

When I first came to the class and started hearing about having blogs as apart of English class, I never had an actual reaction to how Wendy was going to integrated technology in the class. I feel that technology should be used in classes integrated with the regular chalkboard, lectures, and labs. I can recall reading articles in the past about technology being used in schools and how average people are not up-to-date on using computers. I believe that fact can be true. Coming to class with materials and doing everything else such as typing up papers, assignments, and submitting them online is actually good for me in way. I would want to turn in the assignment online and give a hard copy to the teacher.

As I started to get to know Wendy and how she runs her class, in retrospect, this class is going pretty well. I do like using the blogs as way to sort out and better my writing. So far this semester, or year, I have written a good pile of posts. I think they are not just posts, but writing and thoughts with meaning. Im not writing just for nothing, but with a purpose. The theme of this class is to "Think Globally, Act Locally" and I know this is a journey in progress for me. I feel like Im accomplishing this goal. I may want to tell others about this blog and my paper. It can come in handy and with creativity, it can serve as a presentation of some sort. I am quite sure where blogging will take me, but I think this blog is a part of me. I say this because its something I enjoy doing not just having it for class, but just a hobby and an outlet to online journalism. I dont expect to stop blogging once I leave Wendys class because this is like proof of what I have been doing in the class, and what is going on with me and college. This is my work. This blog is me. I am this blog.

One thing I have noticed is that my passion and knowledge on the topic that Im writing about this semester is rising to the surface. The voice that is kept silent within me is starting to rattle and make an appearance. I do not really share my position an issue since I dont think that it matters to everyone. I observe what goes on around the university and people and I have second thoughts if someone believes what I tell them. I guess they will find out one way or another. This blog helps me to put everything Im thinking and progressing through Freshman year on the internet for anyone and everyone to read. I am glad I have am apart of Wendys class. I find the work to be challenging, but not hard. In other words you have to be on top of the work and making sure you leave time to work on everything to meet the multiple deadlines.

Sometimes I read articles, essays, and post something I have written, I do not find that as a challenge to block me from being productive. There are times when I stumble into a wall that blocks me from writing or tend to challenge me. Other times, I just feel the urge to write in my blog. Writing papers or a responsive essay that is worth writing has meaning. Blogging itself, or the blogger, must have a reason to blog or a specific purpose to blog whether it is personal, for entertainment, formal or informal. Being that said, there is a purpose for me wanting to write in this blog. If I did not show interest in this blog, then I would have less posts and not frequent updates as required. Sometimes I can go beyond the box of just blogging. Interaction with other bloggers can be a good aspect of blogging.

Besides just blogging for the class, along with my big paper on school assessment and this blog, I want to do something with it. Everything that is being accomplished and the finish products, the big paper and the blog (which may keep going), would like to use these go take along with me on and adventure. I am ready for the adventure.

I Want to Write a Book Get it Published

"The way you define yourself as a writer is that you write every time you have a free minute. If you didnt behave that way you would never do anything." ~ John Irving

I have not done anything outside writing besides this blogging and collecting my grades each week. I want to get a book published. Why kind of book you ask? Im not sure. I can write about anything, I can talk about life, I can write about aliens coming to take humans back to Mars. I can write about anything that sparks pen to paper. I have not forgotten about attending college to be a teacher. That is a career that will fit me. I look at it as teachers as with the job of helping the world out producing more professional students.

Last month, I wrote how thinking can cease creativity. Writers do need a bit of time to find something to write. Some posts before that I wrote on how reading, thinking, and writing is important. These skills are important to a writer. You train yourself to be a better writer when you read. Do you agree? Friday I wrote about the three writers that came to the University. They talked on the subject of how they write and how they came about writing on baseball, being in a country during the time of war, and how language evolved from the past to today.

I also posted a descriptive piece that I had written in my English class last semester. I had to think for bit to get very creative to write about an elderly ladys attic. The paragraph as it is called is a piece of fiction work. I have never been in an attic so dusty or antique. I had to be very detailed so that the reader can picture themselves actually walking around the attic.
I still have my portfolio of my essays from last semester. As I look over them, they are good essays and set the expectation of my level of writing skills. There are essays that I will keep and just look back upon. They could be added to the book I want to write and get published.

"Any man who keeps working is not a failure. He may not be a great writer, but if he applies the old-fashioned virtues of hard, constant labor, hell eventually make some kind of career for himself as writer. " ~ Ray Bradbury
